Vanessa Bryant Is As Obsessed With Championships As Kobe Bryant - SportsGrid

Media MonsterNBA

You know Kobe Bryant is consumed by a Jordanesque competitive fire. You know he desperately wants to win another championship before he retires (which, according to Kobe himself, could happen in as few as two years), not least because it would give him as many titles as that very same Jordan guy. The type of competitive fire Kobe has isn’t for everyone â€" one of the easiest questions to raise in the wake of the Lakers’ perfect-on-paper acquisition of Dwight Howard is, “Can he coexist with Kobe?”

But you know one person that kind of fire does seem to be for? Kobe’s almost-ex but still-wife Vanessa. What makes us say? Well, Sports on Earth senior producer Nicki Jhabvala spotted this line from Vanessa Bryant in New York Magazine:

“I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships. If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”

Unrealistic to expect championships every single year? Absolutely. She’s right, of course, about the sacrifices athletes’ families have to make, but demanding a championship in return is placing the pressure pretty high â€" impossibly high, you could even say. But what is Kobe Bryant if not driven by impossibly high expectations? Like husband, like wife. Just imagine, though: if Vanessa was expecting a title with the group the Lakers put out there last year, after adding Howard and Steve Nash and putting together a team that actually is a real threat to win it all, imagine how high her expectations must be now.
