As we all know, teenagers say some pretty dumb things sometimes.
Former Kentucky standout and presumed first pick in this monthâs NBA draft Anthony Davis was interviewed on the Dan Patrick Show last Thursday and basically said that he was going to go out and stop Kobe Bryant.
â[Kobe]'s a monster. So I just want to go out there and play my hardest," Davis said Thursday. "There's a lot of guys that can't stop Kobe. So if I stop him I could be one of the guys that say, âI shut Kobe down'.â
"Be careful what you ask for Anthony," Patrick told the former Kentucky standout. "He listens to the show and he has a great memory."
âTell him, I'll be waiting," Anthony retorted.
Now I have heard a lot of dumb things come out of athletesâ mouths in my day, but this was one of the worst, especially considering Davis is not even in the NBA yet and is basing his statement on one year of college.
Donât get me wrong, it was a great year in which he won the Naismith and Wooden Awards. Oh yeah, he also got a national championship. But Kobe Bryant is one of the best players in the league and has the memory of an elephant.
Watch out unibrow, Kobe is going to make you eat your words. I guarantee it.
Then there is the other small detail that neither of you play the same position.
Kobe is a shooting guard and more than likely Davis will be a center in the NBA. That means the two players will have little contact with each other, that is of course unless they go up for dunks.
Davis needs to put on a few pounds and realize that he is going to have to bang the leagueâs biggest bodies such as Dwight Howard, Kevin Garnett and Tim Duncan. Trying to stop a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer should be less of a priority.
Kobe has been known to play a little harder in games were he is either trying to get revenge or trying to prove a point. You can bet that whenever Davis and Bryant meet Kobe is going to try and make Davis look silly.
I personally hope the first meeting is in Los Angeles because Lakers fans are known to be tough on players and I am sure they would love to lay into Davis.
I am sure in the next week or so Davis will release a statement saying he was misquoted or his statement was taken out of context, but itâs too late unibrow. The Black Mamba doesnât forget.
There is no doubt in my mind that Davis is just trying to make a statement and I have no problem with it. But he needs to remember that as a rookie it is not very smart to challenge a Hall-of-Famer.
Davis, next time you decide to fire off a dumb comment, think about who you are directing it to.
It will only benefit you in the long run.
